Chapter 53 A Dazzling Entrance
Inner City District.
No. 9 on Second Street, Pompey Manor.
The early morning sunlight was full of vitality, seemingly illuminating the entire world and brimming with energy.
The great gate of the manor emitted a long creaking sound as it was pulled open from the inside.
Four or five maids worked together to swing the gate wide open and secure it, while an elderly man resembling a butler stepped out.
He raised his hand, clad in a white glove, to adjust his deep blue cravat at his chest, then waved to the maids.
"Professor Ulysses will be here shortly, don't disgrace the Viscount," he said.
"Yes, Mr. Binose," they replied.
The old butler stood erect, hands crossed in front of him, standing by the gate, quietly awaiting the arrival of the distinguished guest.
Second Street was located at the heart of the Inner City District, where the residents were either rich or noble. Consequently, the nearby environment was considerably pleasant, with both greenery and layout giving a sense of comfort and luxury.
Compared to other parts of the Inner City District, the buildings here were more aesthetically pleasing and grandiose. The structures were spaced widely apart, providing a broad view that was refreshing to the spirit.
Moreover, the elevated terrain allowed for a distant view of the entire Amber City, enticing many middle-class families to use their leisure time for strolls in the area with their loved ones.
Viscount Pompey was a low-key person, not well known by the general populace of the Inner City District. Pompey Manor had stood on Second Street for many years, yet few people knew what went on inside.
"Hey, look over there," said someone.
A group of young women dressed in light yellow shirts and brown skirts passed by.
They were students from the nearby Laburnum Girls' School, each carrying a regulation satchel.
One of them pointed at the entrance to Pompey Manor, drawing the attention of her companions.
"Is Viscount Pompey expecting a visitor?" one of them asked.
"Oh, have you forgotten about Miss Rebecca in the second year? She ignored the advice on the excursion and hurt her leg riding a horse...
I overheard my mother and her friends talking, and Viscount Pompey has found her an excellent tutor, who is said to be a scholar from a public academy," another whispered.
Another student displayed an expression of surprise and recognition, saying softly,
"No wonder Mrs. Megan has been in a foul mood during classes lately; it's probably because she wasn't asked."
"Giggle..."
The girls covered their mouths and laughed.
At this moment, a carriage rolled to a stop at the entrance of Pompey Manor.
The coachman, wearing a tall top hat, disembarked and lifted the curtain of the carriage.
A middle-aged woman of distinguished attire stepped down, her head adorned with a wide-brimmed hat.
"Oh, it's Lady Ulysses!" the students exclaimed in surprise.
"I know her; she's a professor at the Iris Academy and author of the 'Elk Poetry Collection'..."
"I've also read that book, it's simply marvelous!"
The students conversed in hushed tones.
"Miss Rebecca is so lucky to be educated by Lady Ulysses."
"Well, her father is Viscount Pompey after all..."
When Mr. Binose, the old butler, saw the middle-aged woman descend from the carriage, he confidently strode forward with his chest puffed out.
"Lady Ulysses," he greeted her.
He saw her removing her gloves, readying for a hand-kissing greeting.
Unexpectedly, the lady turned and lifted the carriage curtain again, and under the gaze of all present, a tall and handsome young man emerged.
Dressed in a black suit with a felt cape over his shoulders and a black top hat on his head.
He slowly stepped down from the carriage, taking a moment to look around.
Upon seeing the group of female students, he gave them a polite smile.
"Oh! My goodness! Who is that gentleman?"
"He's so handsome..."
Suddenly, Mr. Binose, the butler, was taken aback.
He did not know who this young man was, arriving with Lady Ulysses in the same carriage.
Immediately afterward, Mr. Binose felt a weight on his hand and looked down to find Lady Ulysses had already extended her hand to him.
"May the Sun shine upon you, my lady," he said.
He kissed the back of his fingers and blessed her.
After Mrs. Eulay had put her gloves back on, Binose looked at her with puzzlement.
"May I ask who this is?"
"Oh, this is my good friend, Mr. Jack,"n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Mrs. Eulay introduced to Binose.
The old butler nodded, shook hands with Chen Lun, and greeted him warmly.
"But… Mrs. Eulay, Viscount Pompey invited you alone to dine today."
Binose said politely, pausing especially on the word "alone."
He suspected that this groomed young pretty face must be Mrs. Eulay's love interest.
Yet from what he knew, it was unlike Mrs. Eulay to be so impolite. It was very probable that this pretty face, upon hearing of her invitation from Viscount Pompey, had the audacity to tag along uninvited.
There was no shortage of people from the Inner City District wanting to ingratiate themselves with Viscount Pompey.
"Oh, I believe Viscount Pompey wouldn't mind,"
Mrs. Eulay said with a smile.
Binose felt displeased and cast a glance at the young man with black hair, without showing his feelings.
The latter, however, keenly noticed his gaze and returned a polite smile.
"Mrs. Eulay, surely you understand the reason Viscount Pompey has invited you…"
"Yes, I am well aware,"
Mrs. Eulay cut off Binose's words, promptly made an apologetic gesture, and added:
"Mr. Jack is here for this reason.
I have been unwell recently and may not be able to continue as Miss Rebecca's tutor, but I recommend him."
"Him? This… gentleman?"
Binose looked incredulous.
Setting aside the fact that he had never seen this young man before or heard of any academic achievements to his name, his appearance and age did not seem to fit that of a distinguished scholar.
Even with Mrs. Eulay's recommendation, the Viscount would certainly not agree.
"I shall explain the matter personally to Viscount Pompey, Mr. Binose,"
Mrs. Eulay whispered.
The old butler was silent for a moment and finally nodded.
"Follow me, both of you."
He and a few maids led the way, guiding Mrs. Eulay and Chen Lun into the manor.
The path stretched deep into the estate, with broad lawns on either side much like a prairie, covering a large area.
Chen Lun looked around with interest as he walked.
He had found out about Mrs. Eulay's whereabouts in advance from the clues at the Iris College and waited at her doorstep until he managed to board the carriage using the hypnosis capabilities of "Mermaid's Song."
The effort had taken a considerable toll on him.
To save time, he had frequently used the Hypnosis Necklace, which by now had depleted over half of his Sanity Value.
Bearing the dull ache in his head, Chen Lun let out a silent breath.
"I have finally made it inside. Now the task is to persuade Viscount Pompey to accept me as his daughter's tutor…
If needs be, I shall resort to 'Mermaid's Song.'
But he had a feeling that this matter was not going to be straightforward.
The manor was vast, and it took Binose and the two others more than ten minutes to arrive at the villa entrance.
"The Viscount and lady Pompey, as well as Miss Rebecca, are waiting inside,"
He pushed open the brown wooden The Great Gate and gestured for them to enter.
"Please come in."
"Thank you,"
Mrs. Eulay nodded in thanks, adjusted her wide-brimmed hat, and walked in.
Chen Lun followed closely behind her, nodding to Binose in acknowledgment as he passed by.
The old butler watched the young man expressionlessly, yet he was thinking about the scene of him being sent away by Viscount Pompey shortly.
"Another daydreamer," he thought.
