Chapter 226: 137 Blushing (Second Update)
Chapter 226: 137 Blushing (Second Update)
Upon thinking that the princess had ulterior motives for giving her a gift, Gu Jinyu’s heart felt somewhat disappointed.
“Miss, the princess invites you to study at the academy. Are you going?” a maid at the side asked.
“I don’t know.”
It was not appropriate for a lady to show her face in public, yet this was an opportunity that could make her famous. Staying at home limited the spread of her reputation. She yearned for more people to see her talents, and there was no place more ideal than the Academy.
Yet she was worried that the old Madame Gu and her mother would not agree.
Madame Gu was rather conservative. Convincing her to hire a scholarly tutor for her had taken her father a long time.
If they found out she wanted to study outside the house—
Gu Jinyu’s brows furrowed deeply.
As she was worrying, a servant announced that Lord Gu had returned to the residence.
Gu Jinyu quickly went to the entrance to greet him.
Lord Gu had been busy at the Ministry of Works for several days, looking as if he had shed a layer of skin.
When he alighted from the carriage, he saw his daughter walking towards him with a beaming smile.
“Father!” Gu Jinyu called out sweetly.
Lord Gu felt as if all his fatigue had vanished with that one word, “Father”. He smiled, his eyes doting as he looked at his daughter standing next to him, “It’s so cold, why have you come out?”
“I came to wait for Father!” Gu Jinyu replied with a smile.
Lord Gu spoke approvingly, “You are indeed the most considerate! How is your mother? Is she at home?”
“Yes, she just rested,” Gu Jinyu said.
Lord Gu frowned, “She’s resting so early, is she unwell?”
Just as he finished speaking, he caught sight of the letter in Gu Jinyu’s hand, “What is that you’re holding?”
Gu Jinyu handed the letter over to Lord Gu, “The princess has set up a girls’ school and wants me to attend.”
Lord Gu opened it for a look, “What does your mother think?”
Gu Jinyu replied softly, “Mother just went to rest, I haven’t had a chance to tell her yet. Father, what do you think?”
Lord Gu said, “If your mother thinks it’s alright, then you should go.”
Gu Jinyu hesitated, “As for Grandmother…”
“I will handle it.” Lord Gu did not think there was anything difficult about it. On a sudden thought, Lord Gu asked, “Did they only send one letter? Did they mention how to enroll?”
Gu Jinyu replied, “Just one letter. The person who delivered it said that noble ladies with a reputation for talent in the capital can enroll without any tests. If others wish to enroll, they need to pass an examination.”
“There’s an examination?” Lord Gu’s brows furrowed deeply. That girl only knew how to farm, she couldn’t even recognize a single character, how could she pass an examination?
“Is there a way to obtain another spot?” he asked.
Gu Jinyu asked innocently, “Father, do you want my elder sister to also attend? I can ask if the princess could give my elder sister a spot. If there are none, I am willing to teach my elder sister how to recognize characters and read.”
“Even if you’re willing, she might not appreciate it. Forget it, keep the letter.” Having returned the letter to Gu Jinyu, Lord Gu saw her about to speak and couldn’t help asking, “What’s wrong?”
Gu Jinyu spoke quietly, “Father hasn’t been home for a few days, so you probably don’t know that there has been trouble in the residence.”
Lord Gu asked, “What happened?”
Lowering her eyes, Gu Jinyu gripped her handkerchief, “Third brother… and second brother were locked up by eldest brother in the ancestral hall.”
Lord Gu took a sharp intake of breath, “What offense did they commit? No, your second brother shouldn’t be causing trouble anymore, was it your third brother? What did he do this time?”
With a troubled expression, Gu Jinyu said, “It appears… third brother and older sister had some conflict, and older sister beat him up. Third brother was severely injured.”
“That girl, does she just beat up anyone she catches?” Lord Gu felt a twinge of annoyance, rolling up his sleeves, he asked in a cold voice, “Did that girl come back to the residence yet?”
“Older sister…”
“The eldest miss has not yet returned to the residence.” n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Gu Jinyu’s words were interrupted by a wet nurse who had suddenly appeared nearby.
The wet nurse gave a respectful bow to the two of them, and stated calmly, “The third young master bullied the youngest young master, causing his heart ailment to act up. The eldest miss was angry and only taught the third young master a bit of a lesson. The injuries the third young master sustained were superficial compared to the youngest young master’s, it’s not even worth mentioning.”
Indeed, they were minor injuries, of the sort that kept one bedridden for a month.
Gu Yan was already running around vigorously. Gu Chenglin’s suffering had just begun. He felt agony every night, but the pain-killers were ineffective.
The wet nurse sighed, “Third young master has always been pampered, so he cries out for his father and mother even over minor injuries. The poor youngest young master, even when his heart ailment acts up, he does not cry or make a fuss. He must be so disillusioned, yet he is perceived as being fine.”
Gu Jinyu’s face burned hotly.
