Chapter 196 Meeting the Future Father-in-Law for the First Time
With Xie Qingxiao's comfort, Xie Xiao's mood seemed to have relaxed a little, but just a little.
Xie Xiao still had some insomnia, but at least he managed to fall asleep.
Early in the morning around eight, Xie Qingxiao knocked on the door to wake him up, "Young master, wake up early and have breakfast before going over."
Those words almost made Xie Xiao spring from the bed, "Coming, coming!"
By the time he got up, Doctor Yang had already gone to work.
He still remembered the message left for him on WeChat by his parents, [Son, go for it! Mom and Dad support you!]
Xie Qingxiao said with deliberate sourness, "Look how much your mom cares about you."
Xie Xiao put his arm around his shoulders, "Don't you care too?"
"How could I not care? Your mom really likes Yanran, this girl." Xie Qingxiao glanced at him, "Do better, and after you get ready, take your things and I'll drive you over."
Xie Xiao was very touched, then declined, "Forget it, I'll take a cab instead. If you drive me, I'll be even more nervous."
Xie Qingxiao didn't insist and laughed while teasing about his lack of courage.
In the end, he still watched his son carrying a gift box into the elevator; the fruits were something he had bought from the fruit shop in the morning.
How to put it, Xie Qingxiao felt very nervous himself.
This son of his was only nineteen, right? How had it come to the step of meeting the parents?
Before, when the girl visited their home for meals, he didn't feel much, but now that his son was going to visit a girl's family, he felt very emotional.
Xie Xiao was unaware of his father's sentimental mood; once in the taxi, he sent Luo Yanran a message.
On the other side, Luo Yanran seemed a little nervous too, [I'll come out to meet you later.]
Xie Xiao quickly stopped her, [Don't, I can go in myself. Why make such a big deal...]
With that, he sighed.
The taxi driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror, probably seeing him with his big and small bags, and said with a smile, "Visiting relatives so early in the morning, huh?"
Xie Xiao, keen to shift his focus, seriously said, "Going to meet my girlfriend's parents."
The driver was taken aback: ??? isn't this young man rather young?
When Xie Xiao arrived, he registered at the security gate; the security uncle had already recognized him.
He used to frequently drop Luo Yanran off here during his senior year of high school.
Just the day before yesterday, he had done so again.
Now, seeing him with all these gifts, the guard said knowingly, "So you finally get to enter and meet the parents, huh?"
Xie Xiao smiled and nodded, "Yeah, I finally get to meet the parents."
The security uncle said with a smile, "Good luck."
Then Xie Xiao thanked him and went inside, his mind buzzing the whole time.
He had dropped Luo Yanran off many times, but this was the first time he was standing at the door ringing the bell.
Someone quickly opened that wooden door from inside, then crossed the courtyard to greet him, and it was Luo Yanran in her home clothes.
Her eyes held a smile as she reached out and took Xie Xiao's hand, noticing he was holding things in both hands she reached out to take something, "Why did you bring so much stuff?"
Seeing her, Xie Xiao's heart relaxed a bit, but he still evaded her hand, "I can manage; some of it is heavy."
Luo Yanran still took the fruit basket from his hand and then looked up at him, "Don't be nervous, my mom is also at home, and she likes you a lot."
Xie Xiao was genuinely nervous, but seeing Luo Yanran earnestly reassuring him, he suddenly didn't feel quite as anxious.
He smiled a little, "Okay."
Xie Xiao touched her hand, unable to hold it properly because of the bulky items.
But Luo Yanran seemed to understand, and she took the initiative to hold Xie Xiao's hand, "It's a bit cold; let's go inside."
It was the eve of Chinese New Year, and usually, the Luo family's housemaids and chauffeur would have already taken their holiday leave. If Mr. and Mrs. Luo were too busy to come home for the celebration, Luo Yanran would normally have flown out of the country to visit her maternal grandparents by this time.
But this year, she didn't need to go because her parents had made time to be there.
Entering the house, Xie Xiao was met with a sight different from what he had expected; instead of Luo Ming sitting on the sofa, it was Luo's mother.
Luo's mother stood up with a smile as he entered, saying, "You've arrived, and here you are in our home for a meal, why bring so many things with you?"
Xie Xiao greeted her with a "Hello, Auntie."
Luo's mother beckoned them with a wave, "Come and sit."
Luo Yanran led Xie Xiao over, asking, "Where's my dad? Wasn't he just here?"
"I asked him to help make milk tea. Your father makes very good milk tea. I thought that since Xie Xiao is visiting us for the first time, he should try it too," Luo's mother said, her eyes gleaming with mirth as she looked at the clearly nervous Xie Xiao. "Really, you don't need to be nervous. Can this be more nerve-wracking than the time I caught you two living together?"
The last sentence was obviously a joke.
Xie Xiao couldn't help but laugh, "Auntie, please go easy on me. I really am a bit nervous because I care about Ranran so much."
So I'm afraid of doing something wrong that might make you disapprove.
Luo's mother didn't expect such a candid response and was briefly stunned, then she sighed, "Ah, when looking for a husband, it's better to find one who knows how to talk. Unlike my husband, who's a man of few words—well, that's putting it nicely. He's really just a closed book; he can drive you mad sometimes..."
Luo's mother spoke with a very gentle voice, and Xie Xiao could tell she was purposely finding topics to make him feel more at ease.
And it proved to be quite effective.
Luo Yanran also occasionally chimed in with a few words.
Xie Xiao felt much more relaxed and realized that even the milk tea was a kind gesture from Luo's mother, likely to prevent him from feeling too tense upon immediately meeting Luo Ming.
The auntie was as gentle as Ranran.
After a while, there were sounds coming from the kitchen.
A tall man appeared carrying a tray; it seemed to hold the milk tea Luo's mother had mentioned.
Seeing Luo Ming approach, Xie Xiao stood up.
Luo Yanran stood up as well.
Xie Xiao greeted him, "Hello, Uncle. I'm Xie Xiao."
"He's my boyfriend," the girl by his side added.
Luo Ming's gaze swept over Xie Xiao and finally settled on Luo Yanran, his eyes seemingly filled with resignation, "Sit down, don't be nervous. It's our first meeting, hello."n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Luo Yanran tugged on Xie Xiao's hand, encouraging him to sit down with her.
After they sat down, they didn't let go of each other's hands.
The young couple's subtle interactions didn't escape Luo Ming's notice.
He couldn't help but think, perhaps his image wasn't so favorable in his daughter's eyes?
Did he appear to be the kind of parent who would shoo away a lovebird?
Luo Ming took the initiative, "Try the milk tea I made; your auntie loves it."
As he spoke, he poured a cup for Xie Xiao, who hurriedly accepted it with both hands.
Momentarily, everyone picked up their cups and sipped on the milk tea in silence.
Luo Yanran's gaze swept across her parents and settled on Xie Xiao, before she finally spoke up, "Mom, Dad, why aren't you saying anything? It's making us nervous."
Luo Ming looked at his daughter, clearly seeing that her heart was siding with Xie Xiao.
When his wife had mentioned it to him before, he hadn't believed it. His daughter was a lot like him, so how could she be particularly fond of a boy?
But now, it seemed like what his wife had said was true...
