Chapter 377: Challenging the Elite Four Phoebe
“Alright… Thank you, Master Phoebe,” the questioner said, still a bit bewildered.
“Who was your opponent in the battle?” Phoebe suddenly asked. Could it be a famous Trainer?
The person hesitated for a moment before answering, “It was the Gym Leader of Rogge Gym.”
Gym Leader…
Hearing this, Phoebe suddenly understood. If it was a Gym Leader, that made sense.
“Alright, now it’s time for the challenge round,” Phoebe continued.
The Trainers immediately became excited, all shouting that they wanted to challenge her.
The opportunity to battle an Elite Four member was extremely rare. Even if they lost miserably, it was still something worth bragging about.
Chisana tugged on Terrance’s sleeve, excitedly saying, “Brother Terrance, it’s the challenge time!”
Terrance frowned. Aren’t there too many people here?“Umm, to choose a challenger, I’ll ask a question. Whoever can answer it will get the chance to challenge me.”
As Phoebe finished speaking, the Trainers held their breath, their minds racing.
“Can a Pokémon have three types? Raise your hand if you think it’s possible…”
Everyone exchanged glances. Three types?
Wasn’t it common knowledge that a Pokémon could only have up to two types?
Most of the Trainers hesitated after hearing Phoebe’s question. But a few quick thinkers didn’t dwell on the question itself—they focused on the instruction to “raise your hand.”
Within two seconds of Phoebe finishing her sentence, four hands slowly rose into the air…
One of them belonged to Terrance.
Phoebe chuckled and said to a nearby female Trainer, “You were the fourth to raise your hand, so I’m sorry…”
The Trainer’s expression shifted from surprise to annoyance, cursing herself for reacting too slowly.
She didn’t know the correct answer but figured raising her hand was the best way to stand out in such a crowd.
“Trick-or-Treat move?” Terrance thought. He seemed to be the third to raise his hand—because he had actually thought about it.
“Congratulations to the three of you, you’ve earned the right to challenge Phoebe,” announced Phoebe’s assistant, adjusting their glasses.
“Hahaha, that’s fantastic!” exclaimed a Trainer wearing a short sleeved shirt.
“Hehe…” A young man in a black-and-white uniform adjusted his hair, looking as if this was all expected.
Chisana stared at Terrance in shock, while those around him looked equally baffled.
In just two seconds, these four had raised their hands. Were they guessing? Or did they really know the answer…
“Trick-or-Treat move: when a Pokémon is affected by Trick-or-Treat, it gains the Ghost type. If the target Pokémon already has two types, it gains a third. This move does not affect Ghost-type Pokémon,” Phoebe’s assistant explained. Ŗ
It was clear Phoebe never expected anyone to actually know the answer. She only wanted to pick three challengers, and the current situation suited her just fine.
“Hey~~” Terrance noticed someone staring at him with a completely dumbfounded expression. He glanced over and greeted them casually.
That person… wasn’t it Rogge Gym’s challenger who had just asked the last question?
“You… you, you…” The person’s mouth hung open, utterly dumbfounded. They couldn’t fathom why Terrance had suddenly appeared here.
“The three challengers have been selected. Let’s head to the park’s battle arena,” Phoebe said after assessing the trio.
“I’ll go on ahead.”
Phoebe took a step forward, yet there seemed to be a huge barrier between her and the many people around her, making it impossible to get close.
As soon as she moved, the crowd exclaimed and quickly followed.
“Quick, grab a good spot…..”
…….
At the central park battle arena, the three challengers stood opposite Phoebe, each with a different expression.
The short-sleeved Trainer was a mix of excitement and nervousness. The uniformed young man maintained a facade of calm. Meanwhile, Terrance seemed a bit uncomfortable under the envious and jealous stares of the surrounding Trainers.
“Why is Rogge Gym’s Gym Leader here?” someone in the crowd muttered, still dumbfounded. “Oh, right, he seems to be the temporary Trainer of Rogge Gym.”
“Still, he’s a Gym Trainer! A battle between a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member… I’m really looking forward to it.”
“Brother Terrance….is really going to challenge an Elite Four?!” Chisana was originally upset he hadn’t been picked from the crowd, but now seeing Terrance calmly standing opposite an Elite Four member, this was too big of a turn of events.
“Madam Phoebe, please finish this quickly. Our schedule is tight,” the assistant whispered to Phoebe.
“I know,” Phoebe replied with a dull expression after being interrupted.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
The assistant cleared their throat, stepping into the center of the arena and announcing loudly, “I will be the referee for the battles. The rules are 1vs1. Which of you three will go first?”
The battle arena was now surrounded by a dense crowd. All eyes were on Phoebe and the three challengers.
The short-sleeved Trainer glanced at the other two and said, “I’ll go first.”
Neither objected. The short-sleeved Trainer laughed and gave a thumbs-up, “Then, cheer for me!”
“……” Everyone.
Phoebe gazed calmly at the eccentric Trainer and said, “The Pokémon I’ll be using is this one.”
A Poké Ball was tossed into the air, and in the arena appeared a Pokémon resembling a purple balloon, with a yellow X-shaped pattern at the center of its face.
“Drifloon?” Terrance observed it and murmured to himself, in a voice too low for anyone else to hear. “This probably isn’t one of Phoebe’s main Pokémon?”
Drifloon that hadn’t even fully evolved naturally wouldn’t qualify to become the main Pokémon of an Elite Four member.
Based on Terrance’s experience in raising Pokémon, this Drifloon had clearly been raised well but hadn’t yet reached its peak potential. It’s strength was still growing.
“I’ll use this Pokémon. Go, Houndoom!” The short-sleeved Trainer threw out their own Poké Ball and said, “I’ve got the type advantage here.”
“You can attack first,” Phoebe said calmly, her expression unchanged.
“Houndoom, use Bite!” the Trainer immediately commanded. Hearing that, Houndoom sniffed the air with its pointed black nose. Then, the strong muscles in its legs tensed, and it charged forward, its crimson eyes locked onto the Drifloon in the sky. It bared its fangs and quickly gathered a faint black energy wave, forming a massive jaw that leapt into the air.
Phoebe didn’t issue any commands. She simply looked at the arena with an indifferent demeanor.
A moment later, Terrance’s expression changed, surprise flickering across his face.
Drifloon effortlessly dodged Houndoom’s attack, almost casually. To onlookers, it appeared as though Drifloon was simply agile, but Terrance noticed something deeper.
“Air currents?”
Terrance was startled. He looked at Drifloon. This Drifloon had definitely used the air currents to dodge his attacks. He was all too familiar with this evasion technique. Without anyone realizing it, Drifloon had already used the move “Gust” to turn the entire arena into an area that was advantageous to itself.
