Chapter 347: Selection Begins

The God of Flesh and Blood had been gazed upon twice by fate already. The wounds on his body could only be healed by the will of the living. The owners of the bloodred cities represented fate. They had arranged the lives of everyone at Han Hai. If one wanted to change one’s fate, one had to break through the shackles through the power of will and become the new blood city owner.

Gao Ming’s path was clear. It was to collect the power of will, change the people’s fate, capture or kill the other city owner candidates and become the new owner. This path was incredibly dangerous but not impossible.

When Gao Ming saw Ah Fang for the first time, the will of the shadow world exploded in the child. It attracted the gazes of many others. Back then, Gao Ming noticed something important. The other twelve city owners were not united. There were different complications between them.

“I have to be careful with each of my future steps. Before I collect enough will, I can’t let the God of Flesh and Blood be wounded again.” Life was not easy for the God of Flesh and Blood since he chose to follow Gao Ming. His life was a cycle between injury and healing.

The headquarters’ upcoming selection and cleansing implied the investigation centre’s admission of the tragedy’s existence. In any case, the encroaching black mist around the city also meant that the tragedy couldn’t be hidden anymore. The tragedy was entering its next second.

To survive, people would do anything. The original order was crumbling.

Northern Port City, Research Centre Third Floor.

The clock on the wall ticked. Jing Tuoshen stared at the unlocked door silently.

There was a knocking. Before Jing Tuoshen said anything, the office door opened. A bloodied Wan Jie walked in. He was exceptionally calm and serene. A normal person wouldn’t be able to guess what he was thinking. “What era do you live in? Why do you still keep a mechanical clock?”

“I like to hear the needle tick. It gives me a greater understanding of the passage of time.” Jing Tuoshen shut down the cameras in the room and poured a glass of hot water for Wan Jie. “There are three hours left to the selection. How is your people’s preparation coming along?”

“There’s no problem. If the people of Class 13 dare to come, I’ll kill all of them, especially that Gao Ming.” Wan Jie took a sip from the glass. He was not scared that Jing Tuoshen would poison him.

“You resisted the headquarters’ orders and personally led a team into Bo Wan Village. Not only did you fail to capture anyone, but you also released the ghosts from the village. The headquarters are very dissatisfied with you,” Jing Tuoshen said softly. His expression didn’t change, but the room temperature dipped.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“I will make them satisfied.” Wan Jie put down the glass. “Is there anything else?”

Since Jing Tuoshen didn’t say anything, Wan Jie glanced at the two rooms attached to the office. He picked up the document on the table and wiped the blood from his face. “The tragedy is spreading faster than anticipated. Furthermore, our communication with the outside world has been cut off. I can understand the higher-up’s anxiety. After all, they are humans. They will be afraid of death…”

Jing Tuoshen stared at the bloody documents. He seemed like he had something to say. After a long time, he didn’t pick up his water glass on the table but produced a new document. “The big selection will be conducted at the intersection between the old city and the east city. It will include two of the city’s poorest and richest streets. We’ve sent a lot of our investigators there before, but all of them came out suffering from amnesia and had been turned into mutants.”

“Amnesia?” Wan Jie turned over the new document. The information caused his eyes to light up. “A suspected Level Five Anomaly?”

“That is the assessment result of the research department. I am curious. What did you release from Li San Hospital?”

“Is this anomaly related to the mud figurines at Li San Hospital?” Wan Jie focused on reading. “It should be the workings of the two figurines at the bottom of the black lake. They can control memories and use the power of the rules to strip the power of the ghost tattoo from us.”

“If that’s the case, Gao Ming and the horror game players will be devoid of their powers too. Your main goal is to handle the anomaly. However, you can eliminate the thorns in the headquarters’ side if it’s convenient.” Jing Tuoshen shared the real plan with Wan Jie.

“A great idea, but…” Wan Jie put away the document, “Why do I feel like my team has become the headquarters’ thorns as well?”

“You’re overthinking. The headquarters needs people now. They won’t do something so stupid.” Jing Tuoshen spun his glass and said evenly.

“I hope you’re right.” Wan Jie finished his water and turned to tell the two cubicles. “I’m leaving. I’ll meet you in the east city in three hours.” Wan Jie stood up and left.

After his footsteps disappeared, the cubicle doors opened. The new East City special security unit constructed by Jing Tuoshen walked out. Bai Xiao and Zuo Jun were among them.

“If you made a move earlier, how confident were you that you could kill him?” Jing Tuoshen asked as he studied the floating tea leaves in his glass.

No one answered. After a few seconds, Jing Tuoshen waved his hands impatiently. “Go make your preparation. The gathering will be at the old city’s Everlasting Life Apartments in three hours.”

The sky was dark. The day was getting shorter. It was only four pm but the streetlights were all on.

Everlasting Life Apartment, the place with the highest crime rate in the old city, was just one wall away from the silk-stocking district of the east city, Prosperity Neighbourhood. The wall split the place into two different worlds.

There were only flickering lights in the old city, but the neons of the east city lit up even the dark clouds.

“Some people on this side will never cross over to the other side of the wall no matter how hard they work in their lives.” Fan Li wore a black jacket. The doctor, Lee Chengcai and the athlete, Ou Yang Susu followed him.

The three changed a lot in a short period of time. This was especially obvious in Fan Li. He was a lot more mature. He wore a special, metallic mask.

The streetlights turned on and off. More and more people appeared outside the apartments. They moved about in fixed groups.

“Should we wait a little more? We need to be careful. We mustn’t let a tragedy like Sister Zhang’s happen again.” Ou Yang Susu sighed at the mention of Sister Zhang. They ran into danger in another anomaly, and Sister Zhang, who was familiar with ghost sounds, was killed.

Fan Li’s eyes behind the mask slowly opened. His eyes were bloodshot. “We need to find the people from Class 13 first. We still owe him our lives.”
