Chapter 194 Pumpkin and Pride

The kitchen was a battleground. Jiyeon stood by the stove, stirring a massive pot of pumpkin soup with an exaggerated amount of flair, while Kang glowered at the mess she was making. Pumpkin bits dotted the counters, the floor, and, for reasons beyond comprehension, even the ceiling.

"Do you have to treat that pot like it's some ancient cauldron?" Kang snapped, wiping pumpkin puree off his apron. "This is a kitchen, not a carnival sideshow."

Jiyeon waved her ladle like it was a magic wand, ignoring the splashes that flew from it. "You're missing the point, Kang! Cooking is an art, and sometimes, art is messy. Not everything can be as clean-cut as your weird obsession with perfectly diced onions."

"Clean-cut is the foundation of good cooking," he muttered. "Without precision, your soup will be as bland as your sense of humor."

Yura, perched at the kitchen island with an amused smile, chimed in. "Kang, darling, she does have a point. There's a certain… flare to her chaos." She gestured vaguely at the scattered pumpkin puree.

Kang folded his arms, rolling his eyes so dramatically it was a wonder they didn't pop out of his head. "If by 'flare' you mean 'absolute disregard for cleanliness,' then yes, she's practically a firework."

Jiyeon grinned, spooning a bit of soup to taste. "Not all of us are uptight, Kang. Some of us actually know how to have fun."

"Fun? Is that what we're calling a food tornado now?" he muttered, eyeing the orange-streaked walls. "Because it looks more like a cry for help."

Yura snorted, trying to hide her laughter behind a hand. "Kang, you're just mad that you didn't get to be the pumpkin-wielding tornado this time. Admit it."

Kang threw his hands up. "Fine. Yes, you caught me—I'm devastated that I don't get to coat the entire kitchen in pumpkin. My heart bleeds."

Jiyeon chuckled and flicked a dollop of soup his way, aiming straight for his shirt. It landed with a satisfying splat, a bright orange spot in the middle of his chest. "There. Now you're part of the 'art' too."

He looked down at the stain and let out a dramatic sigh. "You do realize this is why Chef Kang never gets a day off, right? Because every time I turn around, I'm either getting splattered with food or babysitting you two."

Jiyeon feigned innocence, giving him wide eyes. "Babysitting? We're the heart and soul of this place!"

"Heart, maybe," Kang muttered, grabbing a rag to scrub at the stain, "but soul? Only if it's sold to the devil himself."

"You love us," Yura said, smirking. "Don't lie."

Kang let out a huff, grumbling as he mopped up yet another splatter of soup. "I'm just here because the idea of Jiyeon 'cleaning up' unsupervised is about as appealing as a root canal."

"Touching," Jiyeon said, laughing.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

As Jiyeon stirred the pumpkin soup with one hand and tasted it with the other, she rolled her eyes at Kang. "Babysitting us? Please. If anything, we're here to liven up your day, Kang. Without us, you'd be all work, no play, forever stressing over perfect knife skills and dust-free counters."

Kang's scowl deepened as he wiped another smear of pumpkin from his apron. "There's nothing wrong with precision, Jiyeon. Precision is what turns a simple pumpkin into something worth serving."

Jiyeon smirked, ladling a bit of the soup into a small dish and handing it to him. "Then tell me, oh master of knife skills, is my pumpkin soup worthy of serving?"

Kang accepted the dish with an air of caution, as if he expected it to explode at any moment. He took a tentative sip, the flavors unfolding slowly. It was surprisingly good—creamy with a hint of spice, and the pumpkin's natural sweetness danced perfectly with a touch of sage. He shot her a begrudging nod. "Alright, it's… passable."

"Passable?" Jiyeon huffed, crossing her arms. "That's it? After all that stirring, it's only 'passable'?"

Yura laughed from her seat, thoroughly enjoying the bickering. "You know Kang, that's practically his version of high praise," she teased, lifting her wine glass and taking a sip. "Though, it's true. Kang, this soup is probably better than anything you'd manage without her 'chaotic genius,' as she likes to call it."

Kang's eye twitched at the term, clearly offended by the suggestion. "Chaotic genius? There's a fine line between chaos and catastrophe. She just happens to land on the right side of it once in a blue moon."

Jiyeon took the ladle and dipped it back into the pot, waving it like a wand as she gave him a mock-curtsy. "Thank you, Chef Kang, for the gracious compliment."

Kang snorted, setting the dish aside. "Save your theatrics. If you actually cleaned up after yourself, maybe I'd consider a compliment without the 'passable' in front of it."

Yura set down her glass, watching them with a wry smile. "Ah, this is better than any reality show. You two should really consider a career on television."

Jiyeon laughed. "I don't think they'd want us. Our 'chaotic genius' might be a bit too much for TV."

Kang raised an eyebrow. "Or they'd make a new genre: culinary disaster comedy."

Yura's eyes sparkled with mischief. "You know, Kang, you're lucky. Most people would kill to have this much fun at work."

"Oh, I'm having a blast," he deadpanned, wiping a smear of pumpkin from his sleeve with exaggerated disgust. "Can't you see the joy written all over my face?"

Jiyeon leaned over and placed her chin in her hand, giving him a devilish smile. "You know, if I ever start my own cooking show, I'll be sure to make you my co-host. We'll call it 'Chef and Chaos.' You can be the grumpy one who corrects everything I do, and I'll be the culinary tornado."

Kang looked heavenward, as though begging for patience. "You're already a culinary tornado, Jiyeon. The only difference is that I can't walk away from this one."

Yura chuckled, taking another sip of her wine. "Well, if you're looking for another outlet, there's always the pumpkin carving competition this Friday. You can both bring your 'precision' and 'chaos' and see which one prevails."

Jiyeon's eyes lit up at the mention of the competition. "A pumpkin carving contest? Now we're talking. Kang, you in?"

Kang scoffed, wiping his hands on a rag. "Carving vegetables isn't exactly my idea of a good time, but if it means proving that precision beats chaos once and for all, I might consider it."

Jiyeon smirked. "Oh, it's on, Chef Grump."

Yura looked between the two, smiling. "I'll be the judge. And don't think I'll be biased just because one of you happens to be my spouse and the other, my long-suffering coworker."

Kang snorted. "Yeah, sure. Like you won't have your favorite picked out before we even start."

Jiyeon placed a hand dramatically over her heart. "Me? The favorite? Why, Kang, I had no idea you thought so highly of me."

Kang rolled his eyes. "Please. I was referring to myself. We all know I'm the actual genius in this kitchen."

"Genius or not, you'd better watch your back," Jiyeon said, eyes glinting with determination. "Because I'm bringing my A-game to that contest."

The next few days passed in a blur of pumpkin-filled preparations. Kang spent hours in the corner of the kitchen, carefully sketching out designs and practicing on spare pumpkins. Each line and cut was deliberate, his obsession with precision bordering on absurd.

Meanwhile, Jiyeon approached the competition with her usual flair. She spent her time experimenting with outlandish ideas—mini pumpkin sculptures, elaborate carvings, and even a plan to add edible glitter to her creation. Each day, the kitchen bore witness to her creative process: pumpkins being gutted with flair, bits of rind flying across the counters, and Kang muttering under his breath about her "artistic disasters."

Finally, the day of the competition arrived. Yura had prepared a judging station in the dining room, complete with scorecards and a bottle of champagne for the winner. She wore a playful smirk as she gestured to the two massive pumpkins set in the center of the room.

"Alright, contenders," Yura announced, glancing at her watch. "You have one hour to turn these pumpkins into something spectacular. And remember: I'm judging based on creativity, skill, and overall presentation."

Jiyeon picked up her carving knife, pointing it dramatically in Kang's direction. "Prepare to be amazed, Chef Grump."

Kang's eyes narrowed, a competitive gleam in them as he picked up his own knife. "The only one who'll be amazed here is you, when you see how real artists work."

With a mock salute, Yura gave the signal. "Begin!"

They dove into their pumpkins with fervor. Kang's knife moved in small, precise cuts, each slice deliberate and methodical. He sculpted intricate details into his pumpkin, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he transformed the gourd into a masterpiece of symmetry and skill.

Jiyeon, on the other hand, attacked her pumpkin with reckless enthusiasm. She carved wide swathes and bold patterns, adding glitter, tiny LED lights, and even using a torch for a bit of "smoke effect" around the edges. Her pumpkin ended up looking like a wild, glowing apparition, while Kang's was a perfect rendition of a classic, elegant jack-o'-lantern with carved patterns that looked almost too delicate to be real.

When the timer went off, Yura took her time inspecting each pumpkin. She admired the finesse of Kang's work, running her fingers over the intricate carvings. Then she turned to Jiyeon's creation, laughing at the sheer audacity of its glittering, smoke-enshrouded design.

After much deliberation—and a few rounds of teasing—they gathered in front of Yura as she prepared to announce the winner.

She cleared her throat, savoring their expectant looks. "It's a tough decision, but I think the winner has to be…"

She paused, stretching out the silence as Kang scowled, and Jiyeon held her breath.

"…the pumpkin that embodies true, chaotic creativity—Jiyeon's!"

Jiyeon let out a cheer, throwing her arms in the air. "Victory!"

Kang muttered under his breath, but a smile tugged at his lips. "Of course. A mess of glitter and smoke takes the prize."

Jiyeon grinned, giving him a playful shove. "Guess I'll be adding 'Pumpkin Carving Champion' to my list of titles."

Kang shook his head, unable to suppress a laugh. "You may have won this round, but I'll be back. And next time, I'm bringing my A-game."

As they clinked glasses, Yura couldn't help but marvel at the two of them. Chaos and precision, two sides of the same coin. And for better or worse, they made quite the team.
